How QR code tracking works

A QR code can't count anything by itself. A phone reads the pattern and opens the link inside it.

To count scans, something has to sit between the code and the visitor: either a short link on a server that logs each scan before forwarding (a dynamic code), or analytics on the page the code opens.

Two free ways to track a static code

Both count visits rather than raw scans, so someone who scans with no signal won't show up. For most flyers, menus and cards that's close enough, and the code itself never expires.

  • Add UTM tags to your link before you make the code, for example yoursite.com/menu?utm_source=qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=table-card. Google Analytics and most site analytics then list visits from the code as their own source. Use a different utm_campaign on each flyer or location to compare them.
  • Point the code at a page that only the code links to, like yoursite.com/flyer. Every visit to that page came from a scan.

When you need a dynamic code

If the code opens a page you can't add analytics to (a Google review page, a PDF on Drive, someone else's site), a short link that counts scans before forwarding is the only way to see numbers. The catch: most services charge every month for it and stop forwarding when you stop paying, so the printed code dies.

Scan counts on QRigin

QRigin makes static codes today, free. Editable codes with scan counts are planned at $9 once per code, with no subscription. Pick “Editable” under the link box above to see an example and leave your email for when they're ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can you track a static QR code?

Not the code itself, but you can track the page it opens: add UTM tags to the link, or use a page only the code links to.

Is QR code tracking free?

It can be. UTM tags plus free site analytics cost nothing. Codes with built-in scan counts are usually part of a monthly plan.

What does QR code tracking show?

Mostly how many scans happened and when. Many tools, and Google Analytics with UTM tags, also show rough location and device.

Do tracked QR codes stop working?

A dynamic code stops working when the service stops forwarding, often when a trial or plan ends. A static code with UTM tags keeps working as long as your page does.

How much will QRigin's scan counts cost?

The plan is $9 once per editable code, scan counts included, with no monthly fee. They aren't built yet.
